IP allowlists and blocklists

IP allowlists and access to departments of your ezyVet site

Use an IP allowlist to help prevent accidental staff sign-in to an incorrect department of your site. Incorrect sign-in can cause invoicing for an incorrect department and can cause financial records that are not accurate.

An IP allowlist uses the IP address information of a source device to give access to a related department. Thus, only persons who use an approved device can sign in to the department of your site without a warning.
Important: IP addresses are technical information. If you do not know about IP addresses or how to easily get the correct information, speak to your IT staff or an IT company.
Note: If your organization uses a single-site configuration, only ezyVet customer support can configure an IP allowlist. For more information, speak to ezyVet customer support.
Callisto Vets uses a department configuration for their ezyVet site. The site has two configured departments:
  • General veterinary
  • Surgery
It is necessary for only approved devices of Callisto Vets to have access to the Surgery department. The practice manager:
  1. Speaks to their IT staff and gets the IP address information of the approved devices
  2. Configures the IP allowlist of the Surgery department with the IP address information

Result: When a person uses a device that is not approved to sign in to the department, ezyVet prevents the access.

Sign-in settings of an IP allowlist

An IP allowlist has two settings that you can configure to prevent accidental sign in:
  • Warn
  • Restrict

This table gives the function of each setting:

Warn When a person uses a device that does not have the necessary IP address to sign in:
  1. ezyVet shows a warning message
  2. ezyVet lets the person continue to sign in
Restrict When a person uses a device that does not have the necessary IP address to sign in:
  1. ezyVet shows a warning message
  2. ezyVet does not let the person continue to sign in

Format of IP addresses in an IP allowlist

Put applicable IP addresses in the Whitelisted IPs box of an IP allowlist:
The Whitelisted IPs box

You could enter one IP address only for an IP allowlist. Then, ezyVet gives correct access to the device that has that IP address only. Staff that use other devices will see a warning or will not have access to the department.

You can also enter more than one IP address for an IP allowlist. To enter more than one IP address, put a comma between each IP address.

You can also use an asterisk to identify an IP address range. For example, to give access to devices that have addresses 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.34.2, enter 192.168.*.*

IP allowlists and the department selection list

You can configure ezyVet to show or hide a list of departments when a person signs in to ezyVet. (For the applicable procedure, refer to Remove the department selection list from the ezyVet sign-in screen.) If you set the IP allowlist to Restrict, ezyVet does not show the department in the selection list with a device that is not approved.
